From traditional to digital

Traditional lens designs have set the standard for most progressive lenses available on the market today. Nevertheless, there has always been a compromise in optical performance as “best form” lens shape could not be supplied for the individual patient's prescription.

The Varilux 360° Series takes the proven Varilux Design Series including Varilux Comfort, Varilux Ellipse, Varilux Physio and Varilux Ipseo and adds the ingenuity of Essilor’s Advanced Digital Surfacing™.

Digital surfacing provides greater flexibility and control for the production of the intended design on the back surface, however, even with digital surfacing, lens design remains the critical factor.

Hence the Varilux 360° Series takes into account the original and proven progressive lens design on the front as well as the customised surface on the back. Essilor’s Point-By-Point Prescription Mapping™ calculates a unique back surface design, tailored to the front surface progression and the prescription.

Proven Design:

Any surfacing process is only as good as the lens it is being applied to – no PAL brand surpasses Varilux for proven performance and patient satisfaction. In fact, in a double blind clinical trial Varilux Physio non-digitally surfaced was preferred 4:1 over a competitor’s premium digitally surfaced PAL.¹

Essilor’s Advanced Digital Surfacing™:

• Surfacing Calculation - Point-By-Point Prescription Mapping™ is a patented algorithm that analyses the front surface design and then calculates a unique, complementary back surface.
• Surfacing Tools - While competitors are content to use off-the-rack digital surfacing equipment, Essilor took digital surfacing to the next level by creating its own patented equipment. For example, an Essilor digital generator has more facets than a standard generator, so it crafts a more precise lens surface.

• Unlike our competitors, Varilux 360° creates an optimal lens by customising the wearer’s prescription to the front-surface design – widening vision in every zone.
• When a distance prescription is ground on any semi-finished lens, the base curve makes only one “best-form” prescription. Each wearer’s prescription is different and will generate unique variations of peripheral aberration. A single traditional design will not compensate for each of these variations.
